Mount Kenya University’s Institute of Tropical Medicine and the Directorate of Research and Development were honored to host Professor Isabel Lucas, Pro-Vice Chancellor of the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM), on September 23, 2025. The visit, facilitated by Dr. Mercyline Kamande, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Academics and Research Affairs, on behalf of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Deogratus Jaganyi, established a foundation for future collaboration in global health research, training, and innovation.

Reflecting on the engagement, Dr. Kamande remarked: “We believe that strategic partnerships are fundamental to advancing excellence. This engagement with LSTM presents a tremendous opportunity to strengthen our academic offerings, foster innovative research, and create meaningful impact in the field of tropical medicine.”
Representing the Directorate of Research and Development, Dr. Bernard Kanoi underscored the importance of the collaboration: “This partnership is timely as MKU is committed to being at the forefront of training and innovation. It will significantly enhance our capacity to develop impactful solutions for global health challenges.”
Prof. Lucas expressed her enthusiasm for the visit, highlighting the synergy between MKU and LSTM’s vision: “I was highly impressed by the research and teaching facilities at MKU. Establishing strong collaborations with MKU and other leading African institutions is a crucial part of LSTM’s vision to boost training and research capacity where it is needed most.” This engagement signals MKU’s growing role in advancing excellence in education, tropical medicine and contributing to global health solutions.
