The Summer School will explore issues around Sustainable Development Goal Eight (8). Specifically,
it will focus on the topic โ€œDecent Work and Economic Growthโ€. Many young adults are unemployed or
underemployed due lack of required skills sets to enter the job market. SMEs also create jobs most of which are informal. Hence, innovative ideas and projects are needed to improve upon the skill sets of the youth and also accelerate the development and formalization of SMEs in the global south.
Participants will be expected to present innovative ideas or projects on how the broad theme or any of the sub-themes can be achieved especially by countries in Africa.
Please see below the sub-themes. Innovative ideas or projects that provide practical insights of the
dynamics in the global employment market and employability skill sets are particularly welcome.

Dr. Henry Yatich, project Lead ,at a previous ACCESS 1.0 training

The Sub-themes are:

  • Employable Skill Sets Development: The development of employable skill sets especially in the area
of digital skill sets that enhances youth employment.
  • Productivity: Raising productivity especially through SMEsโ€™ innovation.
  • Employment: Facilitating productive employment and decent work for all especially through the
    formalization of SMEs.
  • Decent Work: This includes fair wages, safe working conditions, social protection (insurance), and
opportunities for personal development and social integration.

Participants will also have the opportunity to meet and network with other participants from Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Tunisia, Ethiopia and Germany.
Due to the international nature of the participants, most parts of the Summer School will be held in English.

  • Postgraduate students (PhD, MPhil, MBA, MSc, MA etc) and young faculty.
  • Academics and young researchers with innovative ideas or projects for addressing the theme or any of the sub-themes of the Summer School.
  1. Motivational letter (1 page): Your application (in English language) should show the innovativeness of your idea and how it addresses the focus of the Summer School Theme or any of the sub-themes.
  2. You are also encouraged to provide an idea sketch (visual representation) of your idea and possible contribution to the Summer Schoolโ€™s goal.
  3. Curriculum Vitae (max. 2 pages)
  4. Evidence of student enrollment
